The 2021 Christmas party was a banner year for Holidays and Heroes as we successfully fulfilled our mission by providing an incredible party and holiday gifts for 134 local military families at NAS JRB Fort Worth. After the Holiday party, the board was left with a surplus in funds and wanted to make sure that Holidays and Heroes continued to be a faithful steward of our generous donation and sponsorship dollars.
Our board did their due diligence. We met many times with base leadership and social services at NAS JRB Fort Worth to find out how we could best continue to serve our local service members in need throughout the year outside of Christmas. Food insecurity among our enlisted service members continues to be a rising concern. From the pandemic to rising food costs due to inflation, more and more of our service members are going hungry. So we decided to do something about that.
Holidays and Heroes in Action
We have partnered with the Tarrant Area Food Bank to provide food to our local service members for their Thanksgiving meals (and leftovers for many days after we're sure!) On July 7th, 2022, Holidays and Heroes came together to volunteer their time and a $40,000 check to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. However, on a cosmic stroke of fortune at our local Central Market, our President Kerre Randel Ortegel ran into none other than Congresswoman Kay Granger who generously donated an additional $5,000 to our cause! Together with our generous sponsors, donors, volunteers, and Congresswoman Kay Granger, we are able to put a major dent in the food insecurity crisis affecting our service members. With this $45,000 donation, Holidays and Heroes and Tarrant Area Food Bank will feed 450 local military families by providing 100 pounds of food for each family this Thanksgiving.
Holidays and Heroes now serves the Thanksgiving Holiday as well as the Season of Giving thanks to YOU!
